The SEO works with the faculty, the community, the Alumni Association and all University departments to create employment and research opportunities for students.
As part of the Financial Aid Office, the Student Employment Office (SEO) is a resource for job-seeking students. But it is much more than a jobs database for students and employers. The SEO's first job is to maintain the database. Students need a University I.D. number to log on, but employers may post their jobs from any computer free of charge. The database is user friendly and always up to date. We also encourage students to post their computer, child care, tutoring, and other skills in the Student Skills File. Prospective employers access those listings and contact students directly. This is a good option for students seeking occasional work.
It is important to us that students find the right job, not just any job. While the data base allows students to search and apply for a job that works for them, some employment opportunities go un-posted. Many students seek research positions with faculty members, for example. In addition to the data base, students should check The Faculty Aide Program. That program covers half the wages of students not eligible for Work-Study. The HCRP (Harvard College Research Program) provides funding for student-initiated research and creative endeavors undertaken with faculty guidance.
To broaden our public service listings for students eligible for Work-Study, we work closely with Phillips Brooks House. Together we have established a joint program to cover the employer's share for public service where the employer is unable to pay its share or where the student's work is largely on his or her own. Information and applications are available here.
Many Harvard Clubs across the country provide summer community service funding and/or enlist the help of its members to find and post summer positions on the database.
We invite you to explore our web site for specific information about all our programs and services.
